Design is everywhere

Can someone hand me a tissue, please? I think I'm tearing up...I'm so impressed with the fact that tissue companies are now really taking note of the importance of design. Have you noticed that lately? Some of the tissue boxes are actually really beautiful to look at and mesh so nicely with your decor. And why not? I'm surprised they didn't think of it sooner. From Puff's to Kleenex, tissue companies are really stepping up their game. Kleenex now provides you the option to view the box type and design. Sweet!

Both Puffs and Kleenex have also started a 'build your own box' program.

So, I have a new MacBook Pro on the way for my new teaching gig this fall. Since I am a PC gal (yes, a designer on a PC...gasp), I am a little anxious stepping back into Mac world. But, on a good note, I can always look cool carrying around my new gear with help from Acme Made.

Design in a different way

When I think of design, of course I think graphic design or interior design, but have you ever thought of another talent that people have....floral design? I never thought much of it until I received this beautiful arrangement from Lowe's Floral. Sure, flowers are pretty and it is always nice to receive a bouquet, but this arrangement was stunning! So simple and elegant and classy. It made me appreciate the art of floral design.

I was trolling around the internet researching some ideas for a tattoo design for my cuz and I came upon this blog post. I love how he shows his thought process and sketches. Pretty good read for you fellow designers. Great logo, too.

Missed one!

OMG! I can't believe I missed the one thing I miss the most!

I can still taste the frosting...and you can add those girls to my 'damn talented' list. You should have seen what they could do with cake. Complete art, I tell ya.

Missing in Minot

So, the subject of bringing new things to Minot got me thinking last night about some of the businesses that have come and gone over the years. Change is good, but some of them I really miss. Here is my list of most missed places in Minot in no particular order.

1. The Spice and Spirit - you just can't beat lunch dates at the SnS....and the salad bar. YUM
2. Kings Food Host - ok, you so always walked away smelling like grease, but they had the coolest telephones in the booth where you placed your order. I always got a kick out of that as a kid.
3. Piggly Wiggly - Mom always referred to it as Pigs. "Run down to Pigs and pick up some milk." Gotta love Pigs
4. Dusty's - across from Roosevelt Park. I loved their hamburgers. It was a cool little place.
(I'm noticing all my fond memories revolve around food places....hmmmm)
5. Not food...a different sort of location. There is a housing development called Edgewood Addition. It used to be a field and I spent many hours playing in the coulees. There was also a pond that would freeze over in the winter where I would ice skate. Funny thing is, now my friend is building a house in that very same spot!
6. The Skadium! - seriously, the Skadium was the coolest. How many birthday parties did we have there? First dates? And the smell... there was this indescribable smell. Probably a combination of stinky feet and rubber.
7. Bump and Tilt - I think that was the name. It had an arcade and bumper cars. I guess I was priming myself for the chiropractor visits later on in life!
8. St. Joes (St. Joseph's Hospital) - maybe a little weird to add this to the list, but I have my reasons.
9. Happy Joes Pizza in the mall - It was a treat to stop at Happy Joes after shopping, mostly for the ice cream, though.
10. Oak Park Pool - they replaced it with a very neat water park for the kids, but it was a great pool back in the day...

What do you miss?

Apparently it is STILL a hot topic

It seems as if I have sparked some more interest in the issue of the Community Bowl/Minot according to comments on a previous post. Apparently there were a lot of passionate opinions on the issue. It's funny to see comments on older posts.

I guess more then my mom and two friends read my blog after all. Who knew?

Above and Beyond Award

My company received the Above and Beyond award from the Minot Chamber of Commerce for the work we did on the YP website. It was a nice honor and it felt good to be recognized.

Also, if you didn't know, the Minot Chamber of Commerce does monthly Eagle awards for persons who display outstanding customer service. I usually look at their pictures in the newsletter each month and don't think much more about it, but it was really great to be there today to hear their stories from those who nominated them. I think this is a very nice gesture from the Chamber, especially since good customer service seems so few and far between nowadays. Sometimes it is something really special that they did and sometimes it is just the little things. Take time to notice the monthly Eagle award winners each month, because they must have made a difference in someone's life.

Fun glassware

I've had my eye on these glasses ever since I first saw them in the Uncommon Goods catalog. They remind me of my dog so much, especially when I say "come" and she just stares at me like "Yea, right." Get them here.

Mamma Mia, that was good!

I finally saw the movie last night and it was AWESOME! I was so worried that it wouldn't live up to the live performance, but it did pretty well. The scenery was absolutely amazing and I think they did a great job with casting, with the exception of Pierce Brosnan. His singing was dreadful. I took a bathroom break during his solo. UGH. Anyway, perhaps it is the personal connection I feel with ABBA music and the great experience I had seeing the show in Vegas, but either way, I would highly recommend seeing this awesome show!
