Website wins award

Our company hadn't entered our local AdFed Awards for quite a few years. We decided to enter a few this year and I'm proud to announce that the Minot CVB website came away with a Gold Addy in the interactive category! I really had fun designing this site and all the elements, which included a blog design, icons, and email newsletter. It's a great way to show off my hometown and it was great to work with fun photos taken by John Borge.

For more AdFed Awards received by iNet and Odney, check out our website soon. To learn more about AdFed Addy Awards, visit the National site.

You might live in North Dakota...

If "vacation" to you means going shopping for the weekend in Bismarck or Fargo (while the kids swim at the Holiday Inn), you might live in North Dakota .

If parking your car for the night involves an extension cord, you might live in North Dakota . (or your garage is equipped with a heater!)

If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through eight inches of ice and sitting there all day - hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in North Dakota . ( Personally, I never understood in the summer!)

If you have ever refused to buy something because it's "too Spendy", you might live in North Dakota . (exactly why we aren't in an economic crisis like the rest of the country...conservative spending)

If your local Dairy Queen is closed from November through March, you might live in North Dakota . (almost time for the DQ to open!)

If someone in a store offers you assistance, and they don't even work there, you might live in North Dakota .

If your Dad's suntan stops at a line curving around the middle of his forehead, you might live in North Dakota .

If you have worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might live in North Dakota . (um, no)

If your town has an equal number of bars and churches, you might live in North Dakota .

If you know how to correctly pronounce Bottineau, you might live In North Dakota .

If you measure distance in time instead of miles, you might live in North Dakota .

If your family vehicle is a crew cab pickup, you might live In North Dakota . (love it!)

If you know several people who have hit deer more than once, you might live in North Dakota .

If you often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day - and then, back again, you might live in North Dakota .

If you can drive 65 mph through two feet of snow, during a raging blizzard, without flinching, you might live in North Dakota . ( I still flinch!)

If you see people wearing hunting clothes at social events, you might live in North Dakota .

If you've installed security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you might live in North Dakota .

If the largest traffic jam in your town centers around a high school basketball game, you might live in North Dakota .

If at any given time, there are seven cars running in the parking lot at Wal-Mart with no one in them, you might live in North Dakota .

If you design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit, you might live in North Dakota .

If driving is better in the winter, because the potholes are filled with snow, you might live in North Dakota .

If you know all four seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and road construction, you might live in North Dakota .

If you can identify a southern or eastern accent, you might live in North Dakota .

If, in the winter, you see people starting their cars while standing in the mall entrance; and then, waiting until they are warmed up before walking out, you might live in North Dakota.

If you wear a button that says, "Forty Below Keeps the Riff Raff Away", you might live in North Dakota .

Ummmm....I guess you could take it as a compliment?

It's true that there may not be an original idea left in the world of design. Someone, somewhere has probably thought of it or designed something similar to it. Whether it's intentional or not, sometimes we find ourselves designing things that seem to have a familiar style or feel. But sometimes, it's a little too obvious to ignore, don't you think?
Top banner is one my colleague produced back in 1999 for the Bank of North Dakota.
Bottom banner is one that just happened to show up on Capital Credit Union's website.

Oh My Gawd....

I have no words. Funnel. Eric Kass. His website, his work, his logos, his blog. check it ALL.

Good blog

Just ran across this blog. It reminded me a little of mine. (not saying I'm anywhere near the designer this dude is...but the content of the blog is similar) Some fun stuff. Check it out if you have time.

Flor for your floor

I've added Flor to my 'someday I will buy this' list. I love this stuff and the design possibilities are endless. It looks simple to use...has anyone had any experience with it??

PS. If you receive the catalog, I'm searching for the name of the script font used. I'll try and post an example, but you happen to receive the catalog and know the name of the font, I'd appreciate a heads up!

Pepsi's new logo

There was much discussion the other night while we were at the Pepsi sponsored Business After Hours about the new Pepsi logo. If you haven't seen it already, Pepsi has re-branded themselves with a new logo and packaging. There is a lot of discussion online also, about the design of the new logo. I personally don't care for it. Is it a banner, a smile, a sail?? It is as if they just took the old version and warped it and called it good. And the's a little too phallic for me. (ewww!) I'm also not sure what I think of each 'flavor' having it's own slight variation of white in the mark. Oh well. I don't drink Pepsi, so I don't have to look at it.
Here's BRAND NEW's take: They posted back in October of 2008, but I just saw the new logo for the first time last night!

What are your thoughts on the new Pepsi logo?

Ty Pennington Style bedding

I'm digging this bedding and it's in the color palette I've been considering. Sears has actually got some pretty cool stuff with their Ty Pennington line....and affordable, which is always a plus in my book!

Superbowl ads

What would the Monday after Superbowl be without discussing the commercials?

Here are some of my favorites from yesterday's game.

Bud Light: Office Meeting
Budweiser: Clydesdale Plays Fetch
Bridgestone: Potato Heads (totally targeted for men, I still thought it was funny)
e-Trade: Babies ( "What, I can't flex the golden pipes?" too funny) Moose

Ads that annoyed me.
Career Builder: It's Time (enough already. we get it)
Any of the Go Daddy ads (go to the website to see the rest...ya ya ya...big boobs....bla bla bla)
Coca Cola: Strangers (do you think the majority of people really got this??)
